As part of the Graduate's development programme, 14 MinDef scholars that are currently in their summer break attended a project management course held by K-MAS Management Sdn. Bhd. K-MAS Management Sdn Bhd is a management consultation firm that specializes in providing practical and sustainable business solutions and management service found in 2004. The course was from 29 June to 1 July 2015 at the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies. The 3-day course was conveyed by Mr. Chih Siong Lim, the Chief Operating Officer of K-MAS Xpedia.
The course touched on the basic aspects of project management, such as the do's and the don't's, and the guidelines to follow when handling a project. For example, the course detailed on the general project-planning processes, such as creating a project plan, finance plan, risk plan and communication plan. Mr. Lim emphasized on clarity such as when defining the project goals and objectives to avoid miscommunications. He also stressed on the importance of documentation, stating that all progress should be proper recorded.
In addition to that, Mr. Lim also touched on the significance of identifying which task in a project is the critical task. For instance, in most projects, certain tasks will be the most time consuming and requires completion within a certain period of time. On the other hand, some tasks are more flexible in the sense that they can be done anytime as long as it is completed by the deadline set. These critical tasks are those that determine whether or not a project will meet its deadline or will there be a delay.
As the graduating scholars will be involved in project managements as soon as they begin their career, this course has served to prepare these scholars by giving them an insight of what they may encounter in the near future.
